The Linguistics & English Language subject area (LEL) has twenty permanent staff and a large population of postdoctoral researchers, visitors, and Honorary Fellows. LEL is located in a thriving interdisciplinary School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences where they work alongside analytic philosophers, experimental psychologists, and others.  The linguists and philosophers are co-located in the new Dugald Stewart Building adjacent to Edinburgh`s renowned School of Informatics (the largest and most successful computer science research grouping in the UK), with which LEL has close links through research collaborations, jointly taught programmes, and the work of the Centre for Speech Technology Research (CSTR), which is operated jointly by the two Schools.

LEL undergraduate courses lead to the MA with Honours in Linguistics or in English Language, and to a variety of joint Honours degrees.  At the postgraduate level, degrees by research leading to the MSc, MPhil, and PhD are offered, and in addition there are five taught MSc programmes, in Applied Linguistics, Developmental Linguistics, English Language, Speech and Language Processing, and Evolution of Language.
